It is NOTHING!

 


Mili had come home for a vacation after 6 gruelling months in the dental college that she went to. It was about 8 in the morning when her Mom announced... "Mili utho beta... Suraj nikal k do ghante ho gaye... Aaj dopahar ko mehmaan aa rahe hai.. bohot kaam hai..." Mili did not budge from the bed! Another 30 mins.. this time her father went by and asked her to get up. While he was leaving Mili's room, he announced - "Wake up! Girish uncle and family is coming for lunch today."
Mili woke up with a start as if someone threw ice-cold water on her face. Whenever he came home it scared the shit out of her. It got the child in her out and she would tremble like she was still a 8 year old.
She still remembered that Diwali evening. All her father's friends had come over for Taash party. The evening had started well with music and snacks. As it progressed, snacks were accompanied by drinks and music was accompanied by cards! Some lost, some won - but everyone enjoyed
Little 8 year old Mili, was enjoying running behind her Mom and helping her around with carrying the snacks around. She was having a blast in her newly stitched attire and some of the choicest of sweets that she was able to enjoy!
She was running around the house when she heard a voice call her out. It was Girish uncle. Her father's friend. She knew him from the time she recollected anything she could remember. He would always get her sweets. Make her sit in his lap. Kiss her on the forehead. Sometimes on her cheeks.
That night was different. He called her. She readily went to the guest room willingly. After that what happened was a horror story which Mili has not been able to forget even after 12 years. He made her sit on his lap. He touched her private parts. She resisted. He forced himself on her. He took her hand to his private parts. He rubbed himself against her. He was drunk and the stench of alcohol on him made Mili puckish. And she did. She puked on him. At that instance he let go of her.
Mili ran out of the room crying. She rushed to find her mom. As soon as she found her, she hugged her tight and cried and cried a lot. Her mom was completely confused. She didn't know what was it. After a long duration of asking her what was the thing, Mili blurted out everything. Her mom heard her out in utter disbelief. After Mili was done explaining the entire thing all that she had to say to her was... "Nothing beta. Nothing has happened. He may be just trying to play with you. You did not understand it. Forget it and go and play!" Just then Mili saw her father come in enquiring about why was she crying. Her mom instantly replied Without letting Mili talk - "Nothing, Nothing - aap kaha iss ladki ke rone k baare mein soch rahe ho. Aap jao guests ko dekho."
Later as years passed by, Mili had made a lot of attempts to forget about the instance but couldn't. She got nightmares about that instance. But at the end of the nightmare what left her haunting was not the instance itself but her mom's words - "Nothing has happened!"
As Mili grew up she did try to talk to her father about this but every time her mom discouraged her from doing so.
Mili did well in her studies and started studying at Delhi in a dental college. She met the love of her life but the relationship didn't last for long. Every time Nikhil came close to her she would get into her shell and push him away. Man's touch would remind her of that night and Girish uncle.
Today when her father mentioned about Girish and family arriving for lunch she felt like 100 snakes here standing right besides her and she was right in between. But she wanted to break the shackles. She didn't know how, but she wanted to.
The day progressed. Girish and family arrived for lunch. Mili's father called her out. "Mili - look who is here. Girish uncle wants to meet you."
Mili dreaded to go in front of that devil but she did, like she did all those years after that day because her mom told her - It was nothing.
As Mili came out, Girish called her and said, "aao beta, mere paas baitho." Mili didn't expect herself to do what she did next. Mili went and sat next to Girish. In front of everyone, she raised her hand, places it on top of Girish's private part and touched him there. And the next instance she got up looked at him straight in the eye and slapped him tight on his face, spat on his face and turned around to go away. Her father held her hand and asked, "Are you out of your mind? What nonsense is this?"
All Mili did was, looked straight at her mom in her eyes and said, "It is 'Nothing' Papa. Isn't it Mom?"
She walked away with her head held high and smile on her face!

Mist

Aakash used to love to sit by the window, sip his rum, listen to Rafi and observe the mist in the hill as it got dense! He would often sit and wish - like the mist clears itself in seconds, someone should help him clear the mist that engulfed his life! A life which he enjoyed thoroughly with Pooja around. As both of them passed out of their B-school with flying colours and high-flying jobs they had committed to each other's company for life. 21 years have passed by and this small little story is etched in my mind like it happened yesterday and the learning has been so great that I will never forget it ever in my lifetime In the year 1999, I had just passed out of 12th and was still unsure of what am I going to take up as further studies because I was not the studious types to take up CA or ICWA. I wasn't interested in doing BCom as well. Mumbai University had just launched a new course on the lines of BBA in Pune and Bangalore University and I decided to take up that.
