Seeking the Peak

Image
Nihar was sitting at his study table and thinking! Why! Why was he going to office? Even when the Government had directed to the organisation - not more than 15% employees in the office everyday. However, Nihar had been going to office everyday. He had been a subject of stress for the entire family. He would go everyday to office, come back and sanitise himself well, lock himself into one room so that he doesn't transmit the dreaded corona virus to anyone. Earlier his family would at least get to spend time with him on the weekends. That was also not happening now. He would keep working over the weekend too! He had confined himself to a room and to the laptop which ensured that he kept his job and reached the next level. The next peak for him! On that day though, he was completely off. He didn't want to be confined to the room. He didn't want to work on the process note that his manager asked him to. He didn't want to worry about losing the job. He didn't want to w...

The Best!

21 years have passed by and this small little story is etched in my mind like it happened yesterday and the learning has been so great that I will never forget it ever in my lifetime In the year 1999, I had just passed out of 12th and was still unsure of what am I going to take up as further studies because I was not the studious types to take up CA or ICWA. I wasn't interested in doing BCom as well. Mumbai University had just launched a new course on the lines of BBA in Pune and Bangalore University and I decided to take up that. Through the admission procedure I got admission to a college in Mulund, a premiere institute in the Suburbs - with some awesome professors to its credit. In the first semester we had a subject - Principles of Management. We had a young dashing professor teaching us the subject - Prof. Anil Menon. He was a great guy with a great sense of humour, gift of gab and ability to keep the students hooked on to the subject. After the stipu...

Nitin got off the chair and table which had become his office since the lock down began in March. Work from Home - something that he had longed for years was finally reality. However he soon realised it is not as much fun! The work hours have been long  and tiring. His only respite has been that he was able to see a lot of his 1 year old son. Was able to play with him, see him grow, feed him when he got time and much more. Nitin got off his chair as he saw Adi come running to him.. he picked him up and tossed him up in the air and caught him back. Adi was all giggles and laughter when Nitin did this. He repeated this a couple of times and let him go to play again. As he got back to his working table and chair, he thought about the very act of tossing the baby up in the air and how the children always enjoy it. He thought as child he must have also enjoyed being tossed up and being caught. However, where did the enjoyment come from? Come to think of it today, it is pretty scary. To ...

Neil lived in a high rise apartment in Gurgaon. He had been staying there right from the time he finished his post graduation and started working. He did his schooling in The New Model Boarding school in Dehradun and post that studied in Delhi till Post Graduation. He was not married yet but had a steady relationship for the past 3 years. Recently Dr. Vivek had shifted to the flat adjacent to Neil's and both of them connected instantly - they were of almost the same age, had similar liking and both of them were single. Dr. Vivek was a general practitioner and had a clinic in the nearby vicinity. They would hang around at their residences, listen to music and drink up till late night on weekends. About half a year passed by and Neil started noticing that his health was getting affected. He used to fall ill very often. He spoke to Vivek about this who gave him some medicines from his own samples. Neil would feel better after the dose but post that his health would worsen than before....

This short story is continuation of the story - Without Closure. If you have not read it. Here is the link to that story -  https://devvanishortstories. blogspot.com/2020/07/without- closure.html "May I come in sir" a knock on the door of the meeting room broke the attention of Amit who was working on a very important presentation which had to be made on the coming Thursday. It was almost end of the day on Wednesday and he was still struggling to get the right flow. The knock was by the Sales Manager with whom Amit was to go for a meeting to launch a new partnership with a large organisation. The sales manager had come to confirm the meeting time. It was scheduled to be at 5.30 PM at Taj Landsend in Mumbai. After exchanging some more notes, Amit immersed himself into the presentation again. Amit, after completing his graduation had gone on to complete MBA from the Mumbai University from a reputed college. He was picked up by a Mutual Fund organisation on Day 1 of the placeme...

Vinay stood at the balcony of his Mumbai home which overlooked the tracks between Kanjur and Vikroli station on Mumbai Central Railway Line. He had spent a fortune and bought this property with a hope of getting a great view of the lifeline of Mumbai from his 11th floor residence. However, all these years he had kept so busy with work that he hardly ever could stand peacefully  at his favourite place in the house. The lock down had given Vinay a much needed break after many years of tireless working. He kept looking at the tracks for hours together. What he was witnessing was something he had never seen in his lifetime of 40 years. He had particularly very fond memories of the local train. He even met his - then girlfriend and now wife on the local train. He had spent hours together sitting with friends while in college at the platform on Dadar station and chit chat while looking at the trains passing by one after the other. Vinay was lost in his thoughts about the locals. The loca...
